If You're Switching to DPC + Health Sharing

8 weeks before

Apply to your chosen health sharing plan
Open an HSA (if you don't have one)

4 weeks before

Confirm DPC membership start date
Confirm health sharing effective date

2 weeks before

Request medical records from current doctor
Cancel old insurance (don't cancel early!)
Set up auto-pay for DPC + health sharing

Switch day

Old insurance ends, new stack begins
Schedule first DPC appointment
Download your health sharing member card
Save your member cards and provider info in Kailo

If You're Staying on Insurance

Review your current plan's deductible, copays, and out-of-pocket max
Check if your doctors are still in-network
Compare your current cost to the DPC + health sharing alternative
Consider adding a DPC membership alongside your insurance for better primary care
Max out your HSA contributions if you have one
Review prescription costs — DPC practices often offer medications at wholesale

Special Enrollment Triggers

You can switch insurance outside of open enrollment if you have a qualifying life event: job loss, marriage, divorce, having a baby, moving to a new state, losing coverage, or aging off a parent's plan. Health sharing plans have no enrollment period restrictions.
